ASTM A182 F5 Alloy Steel Flanges

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures, stocks and supplies ASTM A182 F5 and F5a flanges from Mumbai, India. With 4–6% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum, F5 delivers far better resistance to sulphidation and hydrogen attack than low-chrome grades, making it the standard flange choice for A335 P5 refinery heater and hydrocracker piping.

Product Overview

Why F5 flanges are specified for hot, sulphur-bearing hydrocarbon service

ASTM A182 F5 is a 5% chromium – 0.5% molybdenum ferritic alloy steel used for forged flanges, fittings and valve parts. The higher chromium content forms a protective oxide that resists high-temperature sulphidic corrosion and oxidation, while molybdenum provides creep strength and reduces temper embrittlement. The companion grade F5a has a higher carbon limit and delivers a minimum tensile strength of 620 MPa for higher-strength designs.

Our F5 flanges are forged from certified billets, annealed or normalized and tempered at a minimum of 675°C as required by ASTM A182, and then CNC machined to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or EN 1092-1. Bores are matched to the mating A335 P5 pipe schedule and every flange carries a heat number for traceability. EN 10204 3.1 certificates are standard; 3.2 certification and third-party inspection by TÜV, BV, SGS or Lloyd's are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A182 F5 flanges

Both are 5Cr-0.5Mo grades. F5 allows up to 0.15% carbon and requires 485 MPa tensile / 275 MPa yield, while F5a allows up to 0.25% carbon and requires 620 MPa tensile / 450 MPa yield, so F5a is chosen where higher strength is needed.

F5 flanges are used with ASTM A335 P5 pipes, A213 T5 tubes and A234 WP5 buttweld fittings, giving a consistent 5Cr-0.5Mo chemistry across the piping system.

Its 4–6% chromium gives much better resistance to high-temperature sulphidic corrosion than 1.25Cr or 2.25Cr grades, which makes F5 a cost-effective choice for hot crude, vacuum residue and hydroprocessing lines.

Yes. F5 is air-hardening, so preheat of about 200°C is normally applied and post-weld heat treatment in the 705–760°C range is specified by ASME B31.3 / B31.1, subject to thickness and project requirements.
