ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Seamless Pipes

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures and stocks ASTM A335 P91 pipes – a modified 9Cr-1Mo steel micro-alloyed with vanadium, niobium and nitrogen. Normalized and tempered to a tempered-martensite structure, P91 delivers roughly double the creep strength of P22, enabling thinner, lighter steam lines in supercritical and combined-cycle power plants.

Product Overview

The benchmark creep strength enhanced ferritic steel for modern power plants

ASTM A335 P91 is a seamless 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb alloy steel pipe belonging to the family of creep strength enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steels. Controlled additions of vanadium (0.18–0.25%), niobium (0.06–0.10%) and nitrogen (0.030–0.070%) form fine, stable MX carbonitride precipitates that pin dislocations and preserve strength during long-term exposure at 565–650°C. The result is a minimum tensile strength of 585 MPa and creep-rupture properties far above P22, combined with the oxidation resistance of 9% chromium and a low thermal expansion coefficient that reduces thermal fatigue.

The properties of P91 depend entirely on correct heat treatment. Our pipes are normalized at 1040–1080°C and tempered at 730–800°C, then verified for hardness within the 190–250 HBW band required by ASTM A335. Both Type 1 and the tighter-chemistry Type 2 are available. Every length is supplied with full heat traceability, 100% PMI, EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates, IBR Form III-A on request and optional third-party inspection by BV, TÜV, SGS, Lloyd's or EIL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A335 P91 pipes

ASTM A335 requires P91 to be normalized at 1040–1080°C (1900–1975°F) and tempered at 730–800°C (1350–1470°F). This produces a fully tempered martensitic structure that delivers the grade's specified strength and creep performance.

P91 pipe must have a hardness of 190–250 HBW (196–265 HV). Hardness below the minimum may indicate improper normalizing or over-tempering, while values above the maximum suggest insufficient tempering. We check hardness on every length.

Type 2 has tighter limits on manganese, silicon, sulphur, nickel and aluminium, a narrower nitrogen range, restrictions on residual elements and an N/Al ratio requirement. These controls improve long-term creep ductility and consistency. Type 2 meets Type 1 requirements and is increasingly specified for new power projects.

P91 requires a preheat of about 200°C, controlled interpass temperature, cooling below the martensite finish temperature before PWHT, and PWHT typically at 730–775°C per ASME B31.1. Matching filler metals such as B9 / 9015-B9 are used, and hardness of the weld and HAZ is verified after PWHT.
