ASTM A213 T5 Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures, stocks and supplies ASTM A213 T5 tubes, a 5Cr-½Mo ferritic alloy steel for refinery and boiler service. Its higher chromium gives better resistance to sulphidation and high-temperature oxidation than the low-chrome grades, so T5 is widely used for fired heater coils and crude unit tubing.

Product Overview

Why A213 T5 is chosen for sulphur-rich, high-temperature service

ASTM A213 T5 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube containing 4.00–6.00% chromium and 0.45–0.65% molybdenum. Its chromium content is well above that of the low-chrome grades, giving a protective oxide layer that resists high-temperature sulphidation from sulphur-bearing crude and oxidation at metal temperatures up to about 650°C. Molybdenum adds creep and rupture strength, so T5 holds its strength under sustained heat and pressure.

We supply T5 tubes hot finished or cold drawn, heat treated by full or isothermal annealing, or by normalizing and tempering at a minimum of 675°C (1250°F). Each tube is identified with heat number, grade and size. Lots are documented with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, and IBR Form III-A and third-party inspection are available on request.

  • Strong sulphidation & oxidation resistance
  • Good creep strength up to about 650°C
  • Proven grade for refinery fired heaters
  • Annealed or normalized & tempered supply
  • IBR & NACE compliant supply available
  • Cut-to-length, U-bending & bevelling

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A213 T5 tubes

T5 is a 5Cr-½Mo alloy steel with 4.00–6.00% chromium, 0.45–0.65% molybdenum, a maximum of 0.15% carbon and a maximum of 0.50% silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are each limited to 0.025% max.

T9 contains 8–10% chromium and about 1% molybdenum, so it resists oxidation and sulphidation better at the highest heater temperatures. T5 is the more economical choice where its corrosion allowance and creep strength are enough.

ASTM A213 limits T5 tubes to 163 HBW (Brinell) or 85 HRB (Rockwell B). Hardness is checked on tubes from each lot as part of our standard testing.

Yes. T5 tubes can be supplied cut to length or U-bent to the radii on your drawing. Where your specification or the bend radius calls for it, the bends are stress relieved after bending.
