ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Seamless Pipes

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures and stocks ASTM A335 P5 pipes – a 5Cr-½Mo ferritic alloy steel widely used in refineries. Its higher chromium content gives outstanding resistance to high-temperature sulphidation and oxidation, making P5 the preferred grade for heater piping, crude units and hydrocarbon service up to about 650°C.

Product Overview

Why A335 P5 is the workhorse of refinery heater piping

ASTM A335 P5 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel pipe containing 4.00–6.00% chromium and 0.45–0.65% molybdenum. The elevated chromium level provides a dense, protective oxide scale that resists sulphur-bearing crude oils and flue gases far better than low-chrome grades, while molybdenum maintains creep and rupture strength at service temperatures up to roughly 650°C (1200°F). The specification also includes the P5b (high-silicon) and P5c (titanium-stabilised) variants for special oxidation and weldability needs.

P5 pipes are supplied in the full or isothermal annealed condition, or normalized and tempered with a minimum tempering temperature of 675°C (1250°F). We stock hot-finished and cold-drawn P5 pipes in common schedules, with plain or bevelled ends, complete heat-number traceability and EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. IBR documentation and third-party inspection by BV, TÜV, SGS, Lloyd's or EIL can be arranged on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A335 P5 pipes

P5 is a 5% Cr – 0.5% Mo alloy steel with 4.00–6.00% chromium, 0.45–0.65% molybdenum, a maximum of 0.15% carbon and a maximum of 0.50% silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are each limited to 0.025%.

All three share the same 4–6% Cr and 0.45–0.65% Mo range. P5b has 1.00–2.00% silicon for improved oxidation resistance, while P5c has lower carbon (0.12% max) and a titanium addition that stabilises carbon and improves weldability.

Sulphidation corrosion rates drop sharply as chromium content rises. With around 5% chromium, P5 offers much lower corrosion rates in hot, sulphur-containing crude and vacuum residue streams than P11 or P22, extending piping life in heater and transfer-line service.

P5 is air-hardening, so a preheat of around 175–200°C is common, and PWHT in the range of roughly 705–760°C is typically specified under ASME B31.1 / B31.3, depending on wall thickness and the applicable code edition.
