ASTM A213 T22 Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures, stocks and supplies ASTM A213 T22 tubes, a 2¼Cr-1Mo ferritic alloy steel. T22 has higher creep and rupture strength than T11 and T12, making it a standard choice for final superheaters, reheaters and high-pressure boiler tubing operating at sustained high temperature.

Product Overview

Why A213 T22 is specified for hotter superheater and reheater sections

ASTM A213 T22 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube containing 1.90–2.60% chromium and 0.87–1.13% molybdenum. Doubling the molybdenum relative to T11 and T12 gives a substantial gain in long-term creep and stress-rupture strength. The higher chromium improves resistance to steam-side oxidation and fire-side corrosion. T22 tubes are routinely used at metal temperatures up to about 600°C (1110°F).

Our T22 tubes are hot finished or cold drawn and supplied full or isothermal annealed, or normalized and tempered at a minimum of 675°C (1250°F), as required by A213. Each tube is marked with heat number, grade and size for complete traceability. Lots ship with EN 10204 3.1 certificates, and IBR Form III-A and third-party inspection by BV, TÜV, SGS or Lloyd's are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A213 T22 tubes

T22 is a 2.25% Cr – 1% Mo alloy steel with 1.90–2.60% chromium, 0.87–1.13% molybdenum, 0.05–0.15% carbon and a maximum of 0.50% silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are each limited to 0.025% max.

T22 has roughly twice the molybdenum and more chromium than T11. This gives it noticeably higher allowable stresses above about 540°C in ASME Section II-D, so walls can be thinner or the tube can run at higher temperatures for the same design life.

The European equivalent is 10CrMo9-10 (1.7380) to EN 10216-2, and the Japanese equivalent is STBA 24 to JIS G3462.

A preheat of about 150–200°C is typical. Post-weld heat treatment is generally carried out at 700–760°C, with exemptions for small-diameter, thin-wall tubes as permitted by ASME Section I and B31.1.
